Custom Concrete Lap Pools Built for Swimming
A lap pool is a long, narrow swimming pool designed primarily for exercise. Its straight shape gives swimmers enough room to settle into a stroke. This helps them maintain rhythm and complete repeated laps without visiting a public pool.
As an experienced lap pool builder in Sydney, FreeStyle creates custom pools around the way you swim. We have the expertise to plan the length, width, depth, entry points, and equipment around your fitness level and backyard.
Here is an overview of some of the different pools we build. They include plunge pools, concrete pools and in-ground pools.
Lap Pool Sizes and Lengths
As a business, we can create custom concrete pools that are not limited to a standard shell. This means we can adjust the dimensions to suit your block.
How Long Does a Lap Pool Need to Be?
The standard lap pool size for basic home exercise is around 10 to 12.5 metres. That said, if you are an accomplished swimmer, you may find the turns too close together at this size.
Instead, longer lap pools might be a better option as they are commonly 12.5 to 18 metres long. If space allows, we can create a 20+ metre pool to give you more room to swim.
When working on your pool project, our team will assess the site and discuss your training plans before recommending a length. If you have more limited space, we can include a swim jet in a shorter pool to facilitate more continuous resistance swimming.
Width and Depth
Generally, a single-lane lap pool is 2 to 2.5 metres wide. This size gives one swimmer comfortable clearance while keeping the pool narrow. If two or more people will be swimming, a width of roughly 3 metres should let them do so side by side.
Many residential lap pools are around 1.2 to 1.5 metres deep. However, this may not suit swimmers who practise tumble turns as they may prefer more depth at the turning end. The final depth you choose should account for how your family will use the pool.
Lap Pool Design Options
For many customers, a straight rectangular shape is the most popular choice. However, a custom concrete design allows more flexibility to create a dream pool. For instance, an L-shaped design can combine a swimming lane with another area specifically for relaxation. Similarly, raised edges can counter sloping ground, while wet edges create a clean connection to a view.
We can also group steps, ledges, and seating at one end to ensure they don’t interrupt the lane. Additionally, coping, paving, and landscaping can connect the new pool with the house and backyard. You can choose from several interior finishes to suit your style
Heating for Year-Round Swimming
Without heating, a lap pool in the Sydney area and northern beaches, may not be used through much of the cooler season.
If you want to use your pool all year-round, we recommend electric heating. Overall, an electric heat pump gives you greater temperature control. Gas, on the other hand, provides rapid heating, although it generally costs more to run. Pool covers are a good way to reduce heat loss and water evaporation.

The Lap Pool Build Process
At FreeStyle Pools, we begin all pool construction projects with a free consultation. We also perform a site assessment, where our team considers factors such as access, ground conditions, council requirements, landscaping, and the relationship between the pool and house.
After the inspection, they produce a custom design, with construction beginning once it is approved. The pool building process includes several stages. These include excavation, steelwork, plumbing, concrete placement, curing, coping, paving, and the interior finish.
